There are three main types of dental crowns : porcelain fused to metal, full gold, and all porcelain. Porcelain fused to metal crowns are the most common type used for permanent restoration and are made from a metal core with a porcelain layer.  Full gold crowns have an all-gold composition, whereas all-porcelain crowns have an all-porcelain composition. All-porcelain is considered more esthetic because it closely mimics natural tooth structure. The decision between these three types comes down to personal preference in regards to appearance and cost. One consideration should be whether you want your tooth to look like it has been stained or discolored due to the use of nickel. If you do not want that effect, then go with a porcelain fused to metal crown as they are less likely to produce that effect than other two types mentioned above.  Porcelain fused to metal crowns come at a lower cost than full gold or all-porcelain; however, they may not match the color as well as either other
